A new building in Saltlake, fitted out across three levels for a Montessori school that had been running in rented rooms. Nearly every piece of furniture was drawn by hand and dimensioned to a child’s reach rather than an adult’s.

The brief

An interior fit-out and landscape for a Montessori preschool moving into a building of its own. The client had been running the school in rented premises and then built new; this is the fit-out of that building — a ground floor, a first floor and a terrace. Three sections, on the Montessori divisions: the Nido from around two months until a child is walking, the Toddler community from roughly fourteen months to three years, and Primary from three to six — the breaks set by what a child can do rather than by a birthday. Alongside them, reception and parents’ waiting, a staff office and a communal dining and meeting room. Not everything was to be new: furniture came across from the old school, and the job ran on three questions written onto the sketches — what we retain, what we make new, what needs to be refurbished.

The response

We started in the old school. The client was still running in the rented premises, so there was a working Montessori to watch before anything was drawn for the new one — notes taken on the furniture the children actually used, its heights and details, which pieces earned their place and which were walked past, and on what the method really asks of a room. Everything after that followed from those notes.

The first thing it settled was colour, and the answer was less of it. A children’s school is not designed by adding more: the room fills with colour the moment it is used — the trays, the materials, the work laid out across the floor — so the architecture stays quiet behind that. Walls white, joinery pale, nothing on a shelf competing with what is on it.

After that, the major work was not designing the furniture but grouping it. Every piece in a Montessori room carries its own rules — what it is for, who uses it, what has to stand next to it — so the plan is really a question of which pieces belong together and how a child moves between them. The client worked that out with us at the table, because the programme is theirs before it is ours. The toddler environment ends up ringed by its own shelves — manipulative, language, practical life, art and music — with washing stations and a toddler toilet along one wall, so nothing takes a child out of the room. Upstairs repeats the arrangement at a bigger scale: twelve shelves, the cylinder blocks, the geometric and botany cabinets, a reading corner.

Then everything is set at the right height, and that is what finishes it. The furniture is drawn to a child rather than bought for one: shelving worked out nine pieces at a time, two table sizes and no more, and a stand for the broom at thirty-four inches, so that even sweeping up stays within reach. Tables stay loose in the middle. Nothing sits above a child’s eye line.

What changed on the way to being built

Very little, which is the point. The three photographs at the foot of the page are the school open and running, and the primary environment is filled out exactly as the first-floor plan set it — the same shelf runs, the same loose tables in the middle. What the drawings could not show is the part that matters: trays laid out and in use, and an adult sitting down to a child’s height rather than standing over.
