It began with a dog. The client had a very small plot in a dense residential pocket of Kalyani, a café in mind, and a dog she was never going to leave at home. What grew out of that is thirteen seats indoors and thirty on the terrace, with an identity built entirely around the animal — and not one sign anywhere calling it a pet café.

The site

The plot is small, and it sits in a dense residential pocket of Kalyani where every neighbour is a house. That gives you two problems which turn out to be the same problem: there is no spare area to give away, and nothing on the street tells you a café is there at all.

The response

So nothing is wasted. Service is packed along the blind edge — kitchen, store, the two toilets, a service lift — and the indoor room is held well back from the street so that the whole front of the site can be terrace. Thirteen seats indoors, thirty out, on a plot most people would have got twenty from.

The wall does the announcing. A curved boundary wall runs the full frontage, wavy in plan and in profile with an arched gate cut through it. Among straight-fronted houses it reads as something else entirely before you have seen a sign — which was the whole point.

Inside, the brief was bright and bubbly: somewhere students and younger crowds would sit with a coffee, a book and something good to eat. So the room is warm rather than smart, and the joinery is soft-edged throughout — arches instead of corners.

The dog is present everywhere and shouted nowhere. The client’s own dog is where the identity came from, and it surfaces as a single paw cut into the fluted counter and backlit. The rest is planning, not decoration: a flagstone run down the east edge, the full depth of the site, with climbing ledges and tunnel pods detailed as carefully as the indoor joinery — so a dog can be walked, washed and parked without ever crossing the dining floor.

What changed on the way to being built

The photographs at the foot of this page are the finished café. The plan and the joinery came through intact: the fluted counter with its backlit paw, the arched wall panels, the picket fence, the wavy boundary wall. The palette did not. The renders’ sand and forest green were built in yellow and teal, and the boundary wall went up an ombré blue.
